The Kandy Esala Perahara also known as The Festival of the Tooth is a grand festival, celebrated in Kandy since the 3rd century BC. The word “Perahara” means parade. Kandy Esala Perahare is a combination of two processions, Esala and Dalada. The Esala perahara was an old ritual performed to request for rain from the Gods to continue their agricultural activities and this ritual is still performed at the Kandy perahara. Dalada perahara is performed to pay homage to the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha, which was secured at the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Tooth temple) back in the 4th century CE.

The Kandy Perahara gives you the opportunity to witness the unique talents and skills of the Lankan dancers, musicians, jugglers, fire breathers, acrobats and other various performers, lavishly decorated elephants with tusks accompany the parade, therefore this event can be considered as one of the most colorful religious events in Sri Lanka.
