Kiri Vehera was built by King Mahasena on the ground where Lord Buddha meditated. Its situated in close proximity to the Kataragama Devalaya. As the Kiri Vehera Dagoba is one of the “Solosmasthana”, that is the 16 pilgrimage sites of importance to worship in Sri Lanka, it is one of the frequently visited dagobas by the Buddhists. Kataragama is visited throughout the year as the Sri Lankan Buddhists believe that it is a holly place blessed by Buddha. Kataragama is visited once a year in order to obtain the blessings of ‘God Kataragama’, who is supposed to be the guardian of the Buddhism in Sri Lanka.
